The first research report work of The Wellesley Institute’s St. James Town Initiative: Neighbourhood and Health, Tackling Inequity through a Community Based Initiative on the Social Determinants of Health. This Photo Voice project demonstrates that newcomer residents’ health and wellbeing are affected at the neighbourhood level, and by factors that are largely not within the realm of the health system. To effectively address wider social determinants of health such as income, living conditions, equitable service availability and accessibility (to name only a few), inter-sectoral and cross-government actions ranging from the local to the national levels and a multi-sectoral approach, involving cooperation and collaboration across the private and public sectors are required. This research also highlights the tremendous community interest and willingness of St. James Town newcomer residents to work to address the social and economic inequities that affect their physical, mental and emotional health.
